Ofrenda

Ofrenda = altar or shrine for Día de Muertos. Includes favorite items of deceased relatives.

The ofrenda is my favorite part of my favorite Mexican holiday, Día de Muertos. An ofrenda is an altar or shrine made to a dead relative. These are assembled lovingly in homes, where it is hoped that the dead will visit during these days.

An ofrenda may be assembled on or near the dining room table in the home. The deceased's favorite foods and other favorite items will be included. Additional items: photos of the deceased, a glass of water to quench their thirst (since the alma, soul, has been traveling for a year), and salt. A camino de flores (pétalos), a path of flowers, will guide the deceased to the ofrenda, lit by candles to help them see the way.
